How can blockchain contribute to a more sustainable and responsible economy? In what ways can traceability and citizen participation build trust in social impact projects? These questions guided the discussion at the event “Blockchain and Sustainability: an essential debate”, held on October 21 at the Madrid Innovation Lab, organized by the Blockchain and Digital Transformation Clusters of the Community of Madrid with the support of Alastria Blockchain Ecosystem, as part of Madrid Tech Week.
DivAirCity: Social Innovation with Blockchain
At the event, our CEO Almudena de la Mata presented the social innovation platform DivAirCity. This solution combines blockchain with ESG criteria, enhancing transparency and trust in sustainable projects across various European cities.
The platform allows citizens to actively participate in monitoring social and environmental objectives, while administrations and organizations receive real-time information for accountability and data-driven decision-making. DivAirCity demonstrates how technology can link innovation, social impact, and governance within a single urban project.
Other Notable Initiatives
The event also featured other projects applying blockchain for sustainability: Marcos Carrera from Fujitsu presented BE Plastic, a platform for tracing plastic waste, and Cruz Guijarro Herrero from UniPimus showcased a token-based incentive system to encourage municipal recycling.
The panel discussion, moderated by Daniela Corredor from Alastria, reflected on how blockchain, emerging regulation, and citizen participation can reshape how companies and public administrations engage with sustainability.
The event demonstrated that blockchain not only transforms technological processes but also serves as a catalyst for trust, transparency, and citizen engagement, key elements in advancing toward a more sustainable urban economy aligned with European social and environmental impact goals.
