How can cities become more climate-neutral while ensuring social inclusion? And what role can citizens play in shaping greener urban environments?
These questions were at the heart of the premiere of the documentary DivAirCity: Reimagining the City at the Brussels International Film Festival (BRIFF) on June 23, 2025. The screening was followed by a debate on promoting social inclusion, environmental protection, and health in urban settings. Dr. Almudena de la Mata, CEO of BlockchAIn Intelligence, attended the premiere to support the project and witness firsthand the outcomes of four years of collaborative work.
The documentary highlights how urban areas – responsible for 70% of global greenhouse gas emissions – can address the climate challenge through innovative solutions that involve the most vulnerable citizens, including women, people with disabilities, children, the elderly, low-income groups, ethnic minorities, and members of the LGBTQ community. By engaging directly with these groups, cities have been able to co-create solutions that improve air quality and overall urban life.
For BlockchAIn Intelligence, the event reinforces the importance of combining Natural-Based Solutions, smart city initiatives, green finance, and citizen engagement to foster sustainable and inclusive cities. The documentary will be broadcast on national TV and available online, extending the reach of these insights and lessons learned.
The premiere also offered an opportunity to celebrate the collaboration and dedication of colleagues who have contributed to the DivAirCity project over the past four years, demonstrating the impact of long-term, citizen-focused research and innovation.
